High scorers tend to feel responsibility or remorse when they have done something wrong or violated their own moral or ethical standards. It is a self-conscious emotion that is focused on the behavior itself, rather than the self. Guilt often motivates us to take corrective action or make amends for our actions.
Low scorers on the Guilt facet do not frequently experience feelings of guilt or remorse. They may not feel a strong need to make amends after perceived wrongdoings and are less likely to dwell on past mistakes. These individuals may appear more carefree, but could also be perceived as less empathetic or considerate of others.
Guilt and Shame are related but different emotional experiences. Whereas guilt is focused on behavior, shame is focused on the self. Guilt is the tendency to feel remorse for our behavior. Shame is the tendency to feel unworthiness and self-disgust when we’ve fallen short of our ideal self or social expectations.
